T-67 Confederate States Note – PMG About Uncirculated 50
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note issued by the Confederate State of America, catalogued by the late Grover Criswell as a T-67. As the Civil War entered its last year, the Confederacy once again was forced by necessity to create a new issue of treasury notes, though most of the designs were similar to the preceding year’s issuance. Due to rampant inflation, many of these notes were issued in very large quantities, with this note being part of that heavy issuance (4,297,004 issued). The central vignette features a three-quarters view of the state capitol building in Nashville, Tennessee, presented amid a somewhat barren landscape. This building was fairly new at the outbreak of the Civil War, having been started in 1845 and completed in 1859. A lengthy financial obligation, both beside and below the vignette, states that
“TWO YEARS AFTER THE RATIFICATION OF A TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Will pay TWENTY DOLLARS to the bearer on demand”

“RICHMOND”
and

appearing at the conclusion. The signatures of “
L Devine
” (Miss Lizzie Devine) and “
A Harrison
” (Miss A. Harrison), two female Treasury employees guarantee the validity of this note, one signing
“FOR REGISTER”
and the other
“FOR TREASURER”
. A rectangular box, presented vertically at the viewer’s left, features the denomination and a geometric design, while a medallion with the denomination in numerical format and a portrait of Alexander H. Stephens, the vice-president of the Confederacy, appear at the viewer’s right. This piece is printed by
“Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S. C.”
, a fact verified by their imprint below Stephens’ portrait. An attractive pinkish protectorate covers the entire face of the note, except for the various design elements. The back features a light blue geometric design, with the denomination written at the center and in numerical format in each corner. Always popular with collectors, this note should elicit spirited bidding.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“About Uncirculated 50”
, with no additional notations on the holder. The note is cut tight in several areas, with the inner frame-lines being affected in those locations. The back is skewed toward the top, with the upper medallions being very close to the edge. The protectorate is quite light, probably a result of poor mixing, while the blue back appears somewhat stronger. Light toning can be seen in the unprinted areas, imparting to the note an off-white hue. Minor soiling can also be noted, principally in the unprinted areas on the back. Folds and wrinkles commensurate with the grade are present.
