1864 .00 Confederate States Note – PMG About Uncirculated 53
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note, issued by the Confederate States of America and cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as a T-68. The central vignette features the only military action scene to be depicted on a Confederate issue, though it is generally believed to represent an artillery battery from the Mexican-American War. A cannon, pulled by four horses, crosses the scene from right to left, while two guns belch fire in the background. Five mounted artillerists can be in the foreground, two on horses and three on the limber. Above and below this exciting scene is a lengthy financial obligation which states that
“TWO YEARS AFTER THE RATIFICATION OF A TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Will pay TEN DOLLARS to Bearer.”
, followed by the location,
“RICHMOND”
, and the date,
“February 17
th
1864”
. This piece is signed at the conclusion by

(Miss Fannie C. Jones) and

(Miss Maria Allen), two female employees of the Confederate treasury. A portrait of Robert M. T. Hunter, a pre-war United States congressman and senator, as well as a short-term Confederate secretary of state and senator, presented in an oval frame, dominates the lower right corner. Above this is the denomination, presented in numerical format on a medallion. The left end of the note features a rectangle, within which are numerous wavy lines and the denomination, expressed as
“TEN”
. A reddish-pink overprint (an anti-counterfeiting measure) covers the majority of the face. The back of the note features an intricate design combining geometric shapes and the denomination, all executed in a lovely blue ink. The note was

on a design apparently engraved by
“Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S.C.”
, as evidenced by both imprints on the note. A nice circulated example of this always popular note. The only Confederate note to feature a battle scene. Add one to your collection today.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“About Uncirculated 53”
, with no additional notations on the holder. This note exhibits irregular margins, with the ends being particularly tight, affecting the inner frame-line (each of the other margins varies in size). The back design is somewhat skewed, though none of the design elements have been affected. The contrast on the front and back is average for the issue, with the protectorate adding nice color to the note. Toning can be seen in the unprinted areas, imparting to the paper an off-white to beige hue. A few small stains can be seen when the note is viewed from the back, as can some minor corrosion at the signatures and serial numbers. A couple of small folds and wrinkles, commensurate with the grade, are mentioned for accuracy. A nice addition to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection. Very representative of the type.
